Ethereum’s Role Shifts as Perpetual Futures Surge
July 29, 2026 — Ethereum’s dominance in decentralized finance is evolving as perpetual futures trading booms, with layer-2 networks now driving the sector rather than the base layer. While fast chains like Solana and Hyperliquid capture high-speed trading volume, Ethereum proponents argue the network’s true strength lies in serving as the settlement and collateral backbone for these emerging markets.

Perpetual futures demand extremely fast execution, low costs, and high-frequency trading capabilities that Ethereum’s mainnet was never designed to support. “Perps require frequent transactions, fast execution, and deep liquidity,” said AJ Warner, chief strategy officer at Offchain Labs, developer of Arbitrum. “That makes them a natural use case for the Arbitrum platform.”
The shift has been underway since decentralized perps exchange GMX launched on Arbitrum in 2021, establishing a template for other platforms. “Ethereum mainnet fees were prohibitively expensive, which naturally attracted perps builders to Arbitrum,” Warner added.
Today, most Ethereum-based perpetual trading occurs on layer-2 networks like Arbitrum and Base rather than the main blockchain. These networks preserve Ethereum’s security while dramatically improving trading performance through reduced block times and growing liquidity pools.
Market Context & Reaction
Solana and Hyperliquid have emerged as dominant venues for onchain perpetuals largely due to retail trader activity. “The most important ingredient for any exchange platform, but especially perps, is retail organic flow,” said Brian Smith of the Jito Foundation. “Solana is the king of retail trading activity.”
Ethereum faces an additional challenge: fragmentation across its layer-2 ecosystem. “You need to be able to trade everything in a single spot,” Smith said. “What Ethereum is suffering from is a level of fragmentation.” Traders often need to bridge assets between networks, creating a less seamless experience compared to single-chain ecosystems like Solana.
Despite this, Ethereum proponents view the network’s role differently. Chris Boulous of Dromos Labs, developer behind Aerodrome on Base, noted that “trading is effectively a network-effects business. You have to build where the liquidity and users currently exist.”

Ethereum’s security-first architecture made it an ideal settlement layer, but block times and gas costs rendered it expensive for latency-sensitive trading applications. The network’s scaling strategy relied on layer-2 networks to handle high-volume activity, dispersing users and liquidity across multiple ecosystems.
Earlier this year, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged that the original layer-2 roadmap vision “no longer makes sense” as layer 2s decentralized more slowly than expected and Ethereum’s base layer became more scalable.
However, some industry figures reject the competitive framing. Matthieu Saint Olive, staff product manager at MetaMask, told CoinDesk: “I’d push back gently on the premise that it’s a competition.” He argued that purpose-built trading chains ultimately need Ethereum for collateral, stablecoins, settlement, and mature DeFi primitives.
What This Means
As institutions begin exploring onchain derivatives, the conversation shifts from whether decentralized perpetuals can work to whether they can compete with traditional infrastructure. “It comes down to execution, custody, and predictability, not ideology,” Saint Olive said.
Institutions require deeper liquidity, better capital efficiency, and improved execution before deploying significant trading volume onchain, according to Warner. “Capital is still fragmented across venues,” he said.
The next milestone, Boulous argued, is straightforward: “You have to be able to do things onchain that you can’t do, or can’t do as cheaply, in traditional markets.”
Whether Ethereum maintains its settlement-layer role depends on solving fragmentation challenges, improving interoperability between layer 2s, and streamlining user experience. If successful, proponents argue Ethereum doesn’t need to be the fastest trading venue—it must remain the deepest and most trusted place to settle trades.
